READING CLUB HOSTS PROF. ABDULLAH AL-TAYYAR
In continuation of the events of the Reading Club at Zulfi College of Education, the club, represented by the Student Activities Unit, hosted Prof. Abdullah bin Mohammad Al-Tayyar as a guest lecturer. Prof. Abdullah started the lecture by drawing the students’ attention to the benefits of the club, such as meeting other students, faculty members and readers in general. This way they can benefit from their knowledge and experiences as long as they keep attending the club. Furthermore, in order to stay active, the club will hold a weekly session, every Monday at 11:00 am, for students, faculty members and any other interested reader in the college. The session was attended by the Dean of the College, Dr. Rashid bin Hamoud Al-Thunayyan, the Vice-Dean for Student Affairs, Dr. Ahmad bin Abdullah Al-Qashami and the Head of the English Department, Dr. Abdulkarim bin Saji Al-Harbi. The Dean commended the club and stressed the importance of reading in developing a reader’s personality. Next, Prof. Abdullah explained how reading enriches the reader’s language and conversational skills by building a large internal lexicon of vocabulary for him. Therefore, an accomplished reader is a skilled conversationalist, since he has an inexhaustible amount of knowledge as long as he keeps reading. Hence, other people will sit and talk with him; as he always comes up with new conversation topics that are neither repeated nor shallow. In addition to this, reading develops our cognitive capacities by offering us a chance to learn from more intelligent and experienced individuals than us. Reading can improve our conversation, persuasion and group discussion skills. Mr. Sami Mohammad Al-Zaarir, the Supervisor of the Student Activities Unit.
