After studying this course, students will be able to:

• Recognize different microbial infections including viral, bacterial, mycotic and parasitic that infect different parts of the human body.

• Differentiate between different microbial infections.

• Choose the best laboratory test for accurate and rapid diagnosis.

• Analyze the clinical cases and estimate the methods of control and prevention.

• Apply the most applicable methods for handling clinical cases.

Content of the Module:

• Epidemiology and Pathogenesis of infectious diseases

• Respiratory tract infections

• Meningitis , encephalitis and other nervous system infections

• Viral skin rashes and cutaneous infections bacterial and fungal

• Eye infections

• Gastrointestinal infections

• Infections of the heart, liver and pancrease

• Urogenital tract infections

• Obstetric and neonatal infections

• Infections of bone, joints and muscle

• Septicaemia and Pyrexia of unknown origin

• Principles of hospital infection control

• CASES

By the end of this course students will be able to:

Content of the Module:

The aim of this course is to train students on different routine and special clinical biochemistry tests used in clinical laboratories and all technical and scientific procedures related to these tests.

The topics included are:

Chapter 1: Laboratory and clinical case management

- Standard operating procedures, Laboratory SOPs, method settings and quality control.

- Interpretation and Reporting laboratory results.

- Clinical case management.

Chapter 2: Body Fluids Analysis

- Urine analysis

- Semen analysis

- Analysis of Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF)

- Analysis of Synovial Fluid

- Analysis of Other Body Fluids (Sputum, Exudates, Transudates,….)

Examination:

Learning Outcomes/ Goals/ Skills of the Module:

By the end of this course students will be able to:

• Recognize the basic knowledge and principles of analytical automation chemistry.

• Recognize of analytical methods (Electrochemical method, voltammetric measurements, Ultraviolet-visible molecular spectroscopic methods, Infra-red spectal analysis, HNMR, Ms, X-ray spectroscopic analysis and Chromatographic methods ).

• Interpret the information about electrochemical techniques and UV-visible, IR, HNMR spectral methods of analysis.

• Identification and determination of different types of samples using different techniques.

• Use and choose the suitable method for analysis.

• Analyze data from UV, IR, NMR,MS.

• Write a report and orally using appropriate scientific language.

• Work in a group and learn time management.

• Communicate with teacher, ask questions, solve problems, and use computers.

• Illustrate deal with confidence with differential equations, integrations, and differentials.

• Operate questions during the lecture, work in groups, and communicate with each other and with me electronically, and periodically visit the sites I recommended.

By the end of this course the student will be able to:

Knowledge: Applied immunology and heamatology knowledge. Vital signs and laboratory investigations,

Describe pathogens and diseases caused by them. Explain the interactions between important human pathogens and the immune system.

Cognitive Skills: Capability of students to do serological test, and make a microscopic examination to differentiate between positive and negative sample. Students should explain, summarize, compare, interpret and predict the different results of positive and negative serological tests.

Diagnose and evaluate the relevance of a test to the disease or infections.
