The mathematical sciences play a vital part in all aspects of modern societies. Without research and training in mathematics, there would be no engineering, economics or computer science; no smart phones, MRI scanners, bank accounts or PIN numbers.
Mathematics playing a key role in tackling the modern-day challenge of cyber-security: ensuring that the KSA is a safe place to do business and that we all benefit from a secure and resilient cyberspace.
And in KSA manufacturing, the industry benefits from a highly-skilled home-grown workforce, superior manufacturing processes and sophisticated quality management systems – all made possible by superior research and training in mathematics.
Likewise the KSA life sciences sector, with significant potential for economic growth, wouldn’t be in such a strong position without mathematics research and training, providing the expertise integral to the development of areas such as personalized healthcare and pharmaceuticals, and underpinning the development of many medical technologies. The emergence of truly massive datasets across most fields of science and engineering, and in business, government and national security, increases the need for new tools from the mathematical sciences.
Mathematical sciences are vital for the future prosperity of the KSA and its position in a world economy.

The application of contemporary MSR can be seen everywhere, ranging from facilitating the development of the latest electronic devices, predicting the consequences of climate change, ensuring the successful organisation of the London 2012 Olympic Games, mondial 2014 and maximising the performance of elite athletes.
It is not just contemporary MSR that can have an impact - research conducted almost a century ago has paved the way for the technology that has come to facilitate a range of activities, goods and services, for example, mobile telecommunications. However, as highlighted Mathematics and its Applications, many people remain unaware of the importance of MSR.
