The Faculty of Sciences in Zulfi - represented by the Computer and Information Technology Department, the Mathematics Department and the Self-learning Unit - coordinated a visit to King Abdul Aziz City for Science and Technology in Riyadh. The delegation visited first the main Conference Hall where students attended a series of presentations on the different research centers in the city and knew about some running projects and a range of products and patents of the City. The introductory presentation focused on the Research Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology, particularly on the National Centre for Computer Technology and Applied Mathematics and the Information Security Technology Center because of their direct relationship with the scientific disciplines of the participating students. Students visited then the satellite center where they looked at several satellite pictures and had an idea on the way of producing 3D images. The visitors had also an idea on the three types of satellites used by the city which are Spot, Ikonos, GeoEye, the last one being the best as it produces highly precise images reaching up to half a meter per pixel. The visiting delegation moved after that to the Robot Section where they viewed four models of robots designed at King Abdul-Aziz City and which succeeded to gain their patents. The first two robots are used for the detection and destruction of explosives. The third one is designed to sense and extinguish fire, while the fourth one is designed for surveillance. The robots are equipped with thermal, night-vision cameras that can be remotely controlled. The visitors reviewed then a range of cutting-edge devices that can effectively contribute to scientific research such as 3D printers and motherboard manufacturing devices. At the end of the visit, the delegation thanked the Department of Public Relations at King Abdul-Aziz City for their hospitality and good reception.
