The Quantitative Detection for Molecular Protein to Molecular Imaging in Experimental Animals

The Medical Laboratory Department, represented by Dr. Suleiman Alsaghabi the superintendent for preparing research and educational laboratories, organized a symposium entitled “From Quantitative Detection for Molecular Protein to Molecular Imaging in Experimental Animals” on Wednesday 4/2/1436. It was presented by Dr. Derk Fashes from American Lekour Company. The symposium was conducted in three sessions with intervals in-between for 15 minutes. A number of teaching staff, specialists and students from Department of Medical Laboratories attended the symposium. In the first session (9:30 am-11:00 am), Dr. Derk discussed the usage of near infrared fluorescent technologies in detecting and measuring protein expression and protein phosphorylation in malignant diseases study, and he compares this to the traditional ways such as colorimetric and chemiluminescence, and how near infrared fluorescent technology is considered the best way in this field nowadays. Then, a short session contained questions and discussions between the attendees and Dr. Derk. The second session was between (11:15 am -12:30 pm) in which Dr. Derk presented a detailed presentation on the applications of the device Licor CLX that is based on near infrared fluorescent technologies in a study of natural biological processes in normal cells as well as a study of a tool for detecting diseases specially malignant diseases like breast cancer, colon cancer and blood cancer. The second session was concluded with some questions and discussions between teaching staff and Dr. Derk. In the third session (12:45 pm - 2:00 pm), a practical presentation on LICOR CLX device where an explanation on how to use LICOR CLX device was given for measuring proteins inside live cells, inside cell protein extracts or in experimental animals. Also, an explanation was given on how it is possible to detect some cancer diseases in experimental animals by using fluorescent dyes without the need to dissect experimental animals and using microscopes as it is the case in traditional ways. During the session, Dr. Derk responded to many questions raised by the trainees. At the end of the meeting, Faculty of Sciences, represented by Dr. Mohammad Aloboudi and Deanship vice Dean for Quality and Development Dr. Mufawwaz Alharbi and Dr. Suleiman Alsaghabi extended thanks to Dr. Derk for traveling the long route in order to present this great symposium. It is worth-mentioning that Faculty of Sciences in Alzulfi owns the device LICOR CLX that is one of other device that were supported by the university projects in order to prepare research and educational student laboratories in Faculty of Sciences. In return, this device will give the opportunity to the students to practice biological processes studies in normal cells and diagnosing some cancer diseases. Also, this device will give the chance to the teaching staff as well as students to conduct research for studying biological cells and cancer cells at the molecular level. In this occasion, Faculty of Sciences expresses thanks and appreciation to the university administration, represented by the Rector of the university Dr. Khaled Almuqrin and his vice Dr. Musallam Aldousari for their unlimited support to the Faculty for the sake of enhancing the performance quality in the research and educational aspects and community service.
