SDG8: DECENT WORK AND ECONOMIC GROWTH
SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth aims to promote sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all. Saudi Arabia is actively working toward achieving this goal, with the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (MHRSD) playing a key role. The government, through Vision 2030 and its associated labor reforms, aims to diversify the economy, reduce unemployment, and ensure fair working conditions. On the other hand, Majmaah University is also contributing to SDG 8 by preparing graduates for the workforce and fostering entrepreneurship and innovation.
SDG 8 in KSA: Ministry of Human Resources and Labor Law
Vision 2030 and Economic Diversification:
The Saudi government’s Vision 2030 aims to reduce the country’s dependence on oil and diversify the economy. Through initiatives like the National Transformation Program (NTP), the government is focusing on creating jobs in sectors such as technology, tourism, and renewable energy, all while encouraging foreign and domestic investment. This economic diversification is crucial for providing sustainable and decent employment opportunities for Saudi citizens.
Saudization (Nitaqat Program):
The Nitaqat Program, implemented by the MHRSD, is a key labor policy aimed at increasing the employment of Saudi nationals in the private sector. This policy requires companies to meet quotas for Saudi employees, depending on the industry and company size. It aims to reduce unemployment and ensure decent work for Saudi citizens by creating more local employment opportunities.
Labor Reforms and Worker Rights:
Saudi Arabia has introduced significant reforms in its labor laws to improve working conditions for both Saudi and foreign workers. These include the Labor Reform Initiative (LRI), which aims to increase labor mobility by allowing workers to change employers without needing the employer’s consent. This reform seeks to combat exploitative practices and improve the overall working conditions in the Kingdom.
Support for SMEs and Entrepreneurs:
The government recognizes the importance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in driving economic growth and job creation. Through programs like the Monsha’at and Kafalah, the government provides financial and advisory support to startups and SMEs, fostering an entrepreneurial culture in the country. This aligns with SDG 8’s goal of creating decent jobs and promoting innovation.
Women’s Empowerment in the Workforce:
As part of its labor reforms, Saudi Arabia has also made significant progress in increasing women’s participation in the workforce. Recent laws have removed restrictions on women’s employment in various sectors and have granted women greater rights in terms of mobility and financial independence. The government aims to increase women’s participation in the workforce to 30% by 2030.
SDG 8 at Majmaah University
Career Development and Job Placement:
Majmaah University plays a crucial role in preparing students for the workforce. The university’s Career Development Center offers career counseling, internships, and job placement services to students. This helps ensure that graduates are equipped with the necessary skills to enter the labor market and contribute to economic growth.
Entrepreneurship and Innovation:
The university actively fosters a culture of entrepreneurship through its entrepreneurship center and business incubators. Students are encouraged to develop innovative solutions and business ideas, with support provided in the form of training, mentorship, and access to funding. These initiatives align with the Kingdom’s broader goals of encouraging SME growth and entrepreneurship as drivers of economic development.
Training and Skills Development:
Majmaah University emphasizes equipping students with skills that are aligned with market demands. Through partnerships with industries and government agencies, the university offers training programs that focus on developing technical and vocational skills, especially in areas like IT, engineering, and healthcare, which are key sectors in the country’s economic diversification plan.
Women’s Empowerment Initiatives:
Reflecting the government’s efforts to empower women in the workforce, Majmaah University supports women’s participation in education and employment. The university provides equal opportunities for female students to engage in leadership, entrepreneurship, and job readiness programs, thus contributing to the goal of increasing women’s economic participation.
Both the Saudi government and Majmaah University are making significant contributions toward achieving SDG 8. The government, through Vision 2030, labor reforms, and support for entrepreneurship, is fostering economic growth and job creation. Majmaah University complements these efforts by preparing students for the workforce, promoting innovation, and supporting women’s empowerment. Together, these efforts help create a more inclusive and sustainable economy that provides decent work for all.

Issuance of the decision is a condition for enjoying the leave
Due to the recent delay observed by some deanships and departments in submitting leave requests for their employees, and their enjoyment of them before the decision is issued, the Deanship of Faculty and Staff Affairs has confirmed that no employee, male or female, will be allowed to enjoy their leave before the leave decision is issued by the competent authority. This came in a circular issued by the Dean of Faculty and Staff, Dr. Muhammad bin Abdullah Al-Jibrin, in which he stressed the importance of adhering to the instructions and regulations issued in this regard. The Deanship has set a period for submitting a leave request of not less than fifteen days before enjoying the leave, whether it is regular, exceptional, or maternity leave.
