The CIFAL Center at MU conducted a workshop titled "The Role of Awareness in Achieving Environmental Sustainability" in cooperation with the Environmental Awareness Initiative under the Ministry of Environment, Agriculture, and Water.

The workshop aimed to shed light on the various roles that different entities can play in achieving environmental sustainability by raising awareness about the importance of protecting the environment and minimizing the negative impacts. 

A group of experts and specialists in the field of environment and sustainable development joined the workshop which addressed many important topics related to raising awareness about the importance of protecting the environment and achieving environmental sustainability, the importance of education and awareness in achieving environmental sustainability, the role of public and private institutions and civil society in achieving these goals, and the challenges and how to overcome them.

Dr. Ayman Al-Barkati, the director of CIFAL Center, pointed out that the workshop is part of the center's contributions to raising public awareness about sustainability, highlighting that other programs are conducted by the Center on sustainable development.

The graduation ceremony of the first batch of environmental observers from the Imam Abdulaziz bin Muhammad Royal Reserve Development Authority was held in cooperation with the Institute of Studies and Consulting Services, in the presence of the Dean of the Institute of Studies and Consulting Services at the university, Dr. Saad bin Muhammad Al Rashoud.

On this occasion, the Dean of the Institute of Studies and Consulting Services stated that the university was keen through the program to provide the trainees with the necessary skills to work as environmental observers in the Imam Abdulaziz bin Muhammad Royal Reserve and King Khalid Royal Reserve, and they are highly familiar with their work tasks.

For his part, the CEO of the Authority, Dr. Talal Al-Hariqi, explained that the Authority pays attention to the development of the local community, human capabilities and its employees through a strategy aimed at developing basic skills, promoting values, developing knowledge, and raising national efficiency.

He said: "Today we see one of the fruits of this interest in graduating the first batch of environmental observers, who are the main factor in protecting and preserving nature and achieving the strategic objectives of the authority," indicating that the training program lasted nine months to raise the efficiency of environmental observers through the development of scientific and practical skills in environmental sciences, natural resource management, ecotourism, environmental legislation and laws regulating the protection of nature, as well as the English language, and computer.

The General Administration of Strategic Planning launched the process of analyzing radiation and nuclear risks in the university environment in partnership with the various relevant university authorities, where a meeting was held under the chairmanship of His Excellency Mr. Muhammad bin Bajad Al-Mashqour, Director General of Strategic Planning, representatives of the College of Applied Medical Sciences, a representative of the Deanship of Scientific Research, a representative of the General Administration of Projects and Technical Affairs, and a representative of the General Administration of Occupational Health and Environment, and procedures for identifying sources of radiation and nuclear danger in the university environment were identified and clarified.

Mr. Muhammad Al-Mashqour stated that in cooperation with the various university bodies, we will reach - God willing - the completion of a detailed plan for the management of radiological and nuclear risks in order to achieve a university environment that supports excellence and creativity, and achieves the aspirations of the members of the university community, offering his thanks and appreciation to the university leaders for their follow-up and keenness on the university environment and their urgent endeavor to be a healthy, sound and free of all risks.

In order to activate the continuous community participations, and believing in the importance of raising the level of environmental awareness in society, the General Administration of Services implemented the Environment Week with the participation of the administration's employees, branches, and women's departments in colleges, and also the participation of female students, through the distribution of various agricultural seedlings in the transport compartments, and the establishment of a number of short lectures and workshops during trips, and the administration also worked to activate a series of introductory lectures for its employees and drivers on the concept and objectives of the Saudi Green Initiative. Launched by His Highness the Crown Prince - may God protect him - to preserve the environment and vegetation cover.

Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Science in Zulfi, Dr. Hani bin Ali Al-Qahiaz, the College of Science in Zulfi held a science and environment hackathon event under the title: (Our environment is our responsibility) coinciding with the Environment Week, in order to motivate college students to compete in innovating environmental solutions, over a period of three days.

The hackathon opened the first day event by registering the participants, then a welcome speech from the Dean of the College to attend, appreciating the efforts of the participants, and thanked the President of Majmaah University, Prof. Dr. Saleh bin Abdullah Al-Mizil, for his continuous support for such fruitful activities, God willing, followed by a presentation of the first introductory lecture on the causes of environmental pollution, which was presented by Dr. Ayman Al-Gohary, and then the second presentation on the proposed solutions for waste disposal using high-quality technologies. Presented by Dr. Mohamed Wajih, after that, Dr. Marwan Abdel Latif gave the third presentation on the environment and sustainable development, after completing the presentations, the hackathon teams were formed and the ideas proposed by the participating teams were formulated, then the initial sorting of the proposals submitted.

On the second day, work was done on forming the initial model of the ideas approved by the committee with Dr. Mustafa Iraqi, and then moving on to building the business model for the proposed projects for the hackathon with Dr. Abdullah Al-Oraini and Dr. Mahmoud Muhammad Ahmed.

On the third and last day of the activities of the Science and Environment Hackathon, this occasion was celebrated at the theater of the Colleges Complex in Zulfi in the presence of the Dean and leaders of the college, where the ceremony began with reading verses from the Holy Book of God, then a speech by His Excellency the Dean of the College through which he thanked the participating teams for their distinguished efforts, as well as thanked those in charge of the success of this event, then a speech by the Chairman of the Organizing Committee through which he spoke about the brilliant and fruitful competitiveness among the participating teams, after that she reviewed The qualified teams participated in front of the audience in the theater and explained their ideas, after that His Excellency the Dean of the College, Dr. Hani Al-Qahiz, honored the winning teams, where the first place was won by the students: Jumana Al-Theeb, Nora Al-Bahal, Mawaddah Al-Nassar, Raneem Al-Nassar, Limas Al-Zunaidi, which was entitled: (The use of drone technology for land reclamation)

The second place was also won by the students: Bilqis Al-Jasser, Ghadeer Al-Qashami, Rand Al-Tariqi, Latifa Al-Badr, Nora Al-Abdulqader, Al-Bandari Al-Anzi, and their participation came entitled: (Application to regulate overgrazing in Saudi Arabia), and the third place was for the students: Reham Al-Mansour, Miad Al-Ammar, Bushra Al-Nafi, Renad Al-Nafie, Afnan Al-Humaidi, Noura Al-Ammar, for a participation entitled: (Smart Irrigation Networks).

In conclusion, the Dean of the College expressed his thanks and appreciation to those in charge of arranging and coordinating the hackathon, including faculty members and administrative staff, wishing them more excellence and creativity.

 Under the patronage and honor of the Vice President of the University, Prof. Muslim bin Muhammad Al-Dosari, the activities of the University's Environment Week for the year 1440 AH were launched under the slogan (We protect our environment for the well-being of our society), in the presence of the Director General of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture Branch in Majmaah Governorate, Mr. Ibrahim bin Muhammad Al-Manna, and in the presence of a number of heads of associations interested in the environment from the Green Majmaah Association, the President of the Green Sudair Association, and the President of the Barari Association, where the activities began with planting a wild seedling in the wild park located in the university city, Which comes within one of the university's initiatives in improving the environment on campus, after that, His Excellency the Vice President was briefed on the initiative of the General Administration of Facilities and Housing, which is the recycling of damaged heaters, which are used to irrigate trees with a distillation system for irrigation. His Excellency the Vice President was also briefed on the program of the General Administration of Occupational Health and Environment in coordination with a number of university agencies to carry out the main axes of the Environment Week by cleaning the campus, paying attention to the environment and protecting it from environmental pollution, and publishing awareness phrases in all university facilities, in order to cultivate a culture of interest in the environment, and His Excellency the Vice President directed the use of environmental specialists in holding awareness lectures and workshops for university students and students of university pioneers schools. And train them to plant seedlings during the activities of the Environment Week. For his part, His Excellency the Vice President stated that such events come within the framework of the university's responsibilities towards the environment, spreading the culture of preserving it in all its aspects, and reducing environmental pollution. His Excellency also mentioned that the university's participation in the Environment Week comes in conjunction with activating the role of partnership between the university and the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture to deliver the awareness message to all segments of society to reach a clean environment. At the end of his statement, His Excellency the Vice President of the University expressed his thanks and appreciation to His Excellency the Director General of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture Branch in Majmaah Governorate and all participants and those interested in the environment, and also thanked the General Administration of Occupational Health and Environment, the General Administration of Facilities and Housing, the General Administration of Operation and Maintenance, and the Social Responsibility Observatory for their participation in activating the university's role in such events.
